August 15th, 2024
42 Ladies played in the 3-ball Texas Scramble, over 15 holes, on Tuesday 30 July. All teams played well, with only 5 shots separating the whole field. Third placed were Clare Davies, Kate Jesper and Mary Duffield nett 51. 1st and 2nd placed teams both had nett 50, Pam Dodds, Lisa O’Reilly and Ann Drinkwater were pipped into 2nd place by Gail Wilson, Alison Stratford and Hilary Ingram who won on countback.

Tuesday 23rd July was Ladies Exchange Day, 44 ladies travelled to Bradford Golf Club for a wonderful day of golf followed by a delicious meal. The competition was an AMAM, with a ‘nearest the pin’ on the 12th Par 3. The 12th felt as though it was a ‘greenkeepers revenge’, with the pin placed at the front of a downward sloping green right behind a bunker! Needless to say, only 2 ladies managed to hit the green all day, Vicky Eyre being the closest. The AMAM was tightly contested with 7 teams having a score in the 70’s, though the outright winning team with 81 points were Carole Whiles, Ruth Skaife-Clarke, Gail Witcomb and Lynne Roberts.

On June 17th, Pannal hosted a golf day raising funds for Saint Michael’s Hospice in Harrogate. The funds raised were an incredible £15,646. Pictured below (L -R) Sandra Gilbert, Hospice, Gary Macnair, Jerry Dexter, James Dix & John Ellacott from the organising committee.

On Saturday 13 July, Neil Richards-Smith won the Jock Ballantine medal with a net 66. Simon Rothwell won division 1 with a net 67 going out in 36 coming back in 38 with 2 birdies and 13 pars beating Alan Pater by 2 shots. Neil Richards-Smith won division 2 going out in 38 coming back in 38 with 1 birdie and 12 pars beating Rachel Memmott by 2 shots. Julian Graham-Rack won division 3 with a net 68 going out in 42 coming back in 41 with 1 birdie and 7 pars beating Simon Barnicoat by 1 shot.

Tuesday 2 July was Ladies’ Captain’s Day. 51 ladies took part in the 18 hole TriAM competition and 11 ladies entered the 9 hole TriAM competition. Top scorers in the 18 hole competition were Rebecca Booth, Mandy Dunn and Katie Burke with 79 points. Second place were Claire Hutchinson, Sophie Jacob and Vicky Eyre with 75 points. The 9 hole competition was won by Josephine Walker and Sandra Dewey with 33 points. There were also some hotly contested nearest the pin competitions, on the 3rdwinners were Dine Faith (9 hole ladies), Jane Bradburn (Div 2) and Gail Witcomb (Div 1), on the 10th winners were Margaret McNeill (Div 2) and Ruth Skaife-Clarke (Div 1). Hospitality at the half way house was provided by the Lady Captain and enjoyed by all the golfers. The thoroughly enjoyable day was rounded off with an evening meal and prize presentation.

On Tuesday 25 June, 35 ladies took part in the Ladies 18-hole Medal competition, which was also the Jubilee Bowl. There were some great scores on the day. Division 1 was won by Ruth Skaife-Clarke, net 70. Ruth, who plays off 6, got off to a great start with 3 birdies in the first 6 holes, continuing her impressive round with a 2 on the 10th. In second place was Sophie Jacob, net 71. Pam Dodds came in third with net 72. For the second week in a row, division 2 was won by Sue White with an impressive net 70. Debbie Bruce, net 75, was in second place, Val Smith-Jackman taking third place with net 79. The winner of the Jubilee Bowl trophy, on countback, was Sue White, this will be presented to Sue at the Lady Captain’s Day dinner in July.

On Tuesday 18 June 27 ladies took part in the Ladies 18-hole Medal competition, which was also the Audrey Charles Rosebowl. Division 1 was won by in form Sandra Taylor, net 74. Sandra’s round included 2 birdies and 3 pars. In second place, on countback, was Gail Witcomb, also with a net 74. Gerry Callander came in third with net 76. Division 2 was won by Sue White with an impressive net 71, including 5 pars. Jackie Smart, nett 76 was in second place, Lydia Scott taking third place with nett 78. The winner of the Audrey Charles Rosebowl was Sue White, this will be presented to Sue at the Lady Captain’s Day dinner in July.

On Sunday 9th June Richard Finney won the Open Stableford with 37 points, followed closely in second place by Jeff Worrall with 36 points.

On Tuesday 4th June, 36 ladies took part in the Ladies 18 hole Stableford competition. Division 1 was won by in form Sandra Taylor, with a score of 37 points. Sandra’s round included 10 pars and a birdie on the 18th hole. In second place was Hilary Ingram with 34 points, followed by Gail Witcomb, also with 34 points, despite Gail having a birdie on the 10th, she was placed 3rd on countback. Division 2 was won by Susan Asquith with 35 points, Susan played the par 3’s particularly well and picked up lots of points on these holes. Sue White came second with 34 points, beating Helen Mountford who scored 32 points.

On Tuesday 28th May, 40 ladies took part in the Ladies 18-hole Stableford competition. Division 1 was won by Sandra Taylor, scoring an impressive 39 points. Sandra played a very consistent round, which included 9 pars and 1 birdie.

On Sunday 12th May the club held a Mixed Foursomes Medal, which was won by husband and wife pair of John & Rebecca Ellacott with John benefitting from Rebecca’s putter being red hot, maybe she could give him a lesson!

The first team has been in action twice recently in the Harrogate and District Union Inter Club league.

On Sunday 5th May the Lockwood Trophy was played for in the annual Ladies v Juniors match.

Tuesday 30 April was the first Ladies Medal of the season, 25 ladies entered the competition, which was also a qualifier for the top 8 ladies to go into the Bunny Belmont singles Matchplay knockout competition.

This week saw the start of the qualifying season at the club with Stableford competitions the order of the day!

Unfortunately, the Ladies Foursomes Cooper Brown trophy and County Foursomes qualifier couldn’t take place on Tuesday 9th April as the course was closed due to another deluge of wet weather. The Cooper Brown trophy will hopefully be rescheduled later in the season.

Tuesday 19th March saw Lynn Sheldrake's first competition as Ladies’ Captain for 2024/25 in the form of the annual Fourball Betterball Team Matchplay, featuring her team versus the Lady Secretary's team lead this year by the Competition Secretary, Carole Whiles.

On Tuesday 12th March, 16 ladies competed for the annual Joyce Griffiths Trophy which is an AMAM competition, usually played over 18 holes from the green tees.

On Tuesday the 5th 33 ladies played in the Mad March Hare singles Stableford competition. Although It was reduced to 13 holes and two temporary greens due to the wet conditions, the day was pleasantly spring like, which encouraged ladies to enter the competition.

Every golfer in the UK is only too aware of the severely adverse conditions which have prevented them getting on to their course. This is underlined by the rainfall figures for Pannal for the first two months of the year.
