On Sunday 12th May the club held a Mixed Foursomes Medal, which was won by husband and wife pair of John & Rebecca Ellacott with John benefitting from Rebecca’s putter being red hot, maybe she could give him a lesson! Their net 64 was two shots better than Mandy Dunn who carried playing partner Rob Booth round the course. Lindsay & Vanda McKenzie came third with a net 67.
On Monday 20th May, the First Team played their fourth league match of the season against Romanby and once again faced tough opposition. In the singles Romanby's lead player was 2023 English Amateur Champion Ben Brown. While he prevailed over Jason Taylor, wins for Will Caldecott and Oli Hunter and a half for Tom Booth meant success for the Scratch team. The Pairs team battled through to a 2-2 result which resulted in an overall win for Pannal. Highlight of the evening was an eagle at the 14th for Lewis Wells. The Men's Captain and Martin Padgett won their match as did Alan North & Craig Hunter, with David Barden & Callum Macnair and Lewis Wells & Gary Macnair going down in the other match.
Team Manager Will Caldecott was delighted with the result bearing in mind the quality of the opposition in the singles and confirmed his determination to make Pannal a fortress as the season progresses. Next up is an away match at Otley.
The Ladies played a Foursomes competition on Tuesday 21st May. Sixteen pairs took part, first placed were Alison Stratford and Margaret McNeill with 39 points, Joanne McCormack and Susan Asquith coming second with 37 points. This competition included optional entry into the Coronation Foursomes and Australian Spoons Foursomes, both of which have regional and national finals. Betsy Haldon and Lesley Southwell qualified for the regional Coronation Foursomes competition, Pam Dodds and Susie Stuart-Brown for the regional Australian Spoons competition. Three ladies took part in the 9 hole Stableford competition, Jane Bradburn taking first place with 17 points.
Captains’ night on Wednesday 22nd May had to be cancelled due to the adverse weather.
Saturday 25th May saw the Green Keepers getting their revenge with the course set up for a fun round of golf played in as a Texas Scramble Medal. There was a combination of challenging pin positions or obstacles strategically placed on the greens such as bunker rakes, hosepipes, tee markers and even out of bounds posts. It made for a fun day of golf after some great imagination from Neil and his team:
• 1st John Ellacott, Rob Booth & Phil O’Connor with a net 61
• 2nd Jordan Jonas, Callum Jonas & Michael Jonas with a net 61 (countback)
• 3rd David Hindle, Philip Cave & Phil Stott with a net 62
