On Tuesday 12th March, 16 ladies competed for the annual Joyce Griffiths Trophy which is an AMAM competition, usually played over 18 holes from the green tees. Unfortunately, due to the continued wet weather, the competition had to be played over 9 holes with three temporary greens.
The runners up were Ladies’ Captain, Clare Davies, with team members, Ann Drinkwater, Hilary Ingram and Pam Dodds, with 41 points. The winners, with 46 points, were Sandra Taylor, Julie Parry, Janet Jones and Carole Whiles. This team scored well on every hole with valuable contributions from every member. The highlights were Janet and Sandra both getting a two on the par 3 3rd and Julie getting a birdie on the Par 5 4th.
Saturday March 16th was an important date on the Club calendar with the annual “changing of the guard” at the AGM. But before that 16 teams battled it out for the annual Millenium Trophy. Held this year over 13 holes it is a mixed format Stableford with teams drawn from the handicap bands making for an interesting and unpredictable outcome. The twist in the tail is at the 18th hole where all four scores count as opposed to just two at the other 12 holes.
With just one point separating first and third it had obviously been a keenly contested afternoon: after a countback Garth Whiles, Nick Rusling, Richard Braddon and Steve Duffy took third place with 61 points. With the same score were Alan North, Andy Brooks, Alan Morris and Gary Macnair in second.
The winners of the Trophy with 62 points were Alan Pater, Jim Bowler, Mike Armstrong and Frank Flaherty with Frank’s three points at their final hole making all the difference.
Later on Saturday the Club Annual General Meeting took place with retiring chairman Andy North in the Chair: he was able to report an excellent year for the Club with a very positive financial result and a strong waiting list of potential new members. Following the various elections, Richard Topham took over as Chairman. Retiring Captains Martin Boyle and Clare Davies were warmly thanked by everyone present following which they handed over their badges of office to the 2024 Captains David Everingham and Lynn Sheldrake. Andrew Asquith and Vicky Eyre were elected as Vice Captains with members voting Lindsay Mckenzie and Callum Macnair onto the Board.
On Sunday March 17th the traditional Captains’ Drive In took place at 1.00pm. Members had signed up before the event to predict the length and direction of the drives with the proceeds going to the Yorkshire Brain Tumour Charity, the Captains’ chosen fundraiser for 2024. Joined by the Junior Captain all three drives were straight and true with Will Hixon managing 260 yards on a course with no run!
